Salesforce is an organizational software program that offers its customers a multitude of services, including CRM (customer relationship management), sales, marketing, and service applications and tools.

Each service comes in an easy-to-use package and helps organizations get the most out of their software, so they can better serve the needs of their customers and prospects.

What is Salesforce Organization?

An Organization in Salesforce Is Actually a Virtual Space Provided to One Individual Customer,  Separate from All Other Organizations.

Each Organization Has Its Own Data and Applications, It Can Be Compared to a Folder on Your Computer.

When You Log into Salesforce, You Are Logged Into Your Personal Org, This Is Where You Create Objects (Data), Add Users (Users) and Set Permissions (Security).

If You Have Multiple Customers, Then There Will Be Multiple Orgs on Your Instance of Salesforce And You Will Have an Administrator Role for Each Org.

The Administrator Role Has Full Control Over That Org, Including Creating New Users and Adding New Apps.

The Administrator Role Can Also See Any Data That Is Created or Modified by Anyone in Their Org.

In Order To See Data From Another Org, You Must Be Added as a User of That Org By Someone with Admin Rights in that Org, Only an Administrator can add users to their org.

What are Orgs?

Organizations (or Orgs) are independent entities within your org that have their own data and can be seen as individual customer organizations.

They can also be referred to as organizations or user groups. By default, organizations in your Salesforce instance include yourself, called an Enterprise Organization, plus a development sandbox organization where you can safely try out new features before they’re released to other users.

You can create additional organizations if needed. For example, if you want to create a separate organization for each of your clients or business units.

Organizations allow for greater flexibility in how you share data with others inside and outside your organization because only members with access rights can see specific records.

Types of org

Organizations generally fall into two broad categories: production groups and development groups.

Production Instance

A production instance is an organization that you use to run your business. It’s where your data lives, where you create applications, and where you sell products.

A production instance is always associated with a single organization, but you can create multiple organizations within a single instance.

For example, you might have an organization for sales and another for marketing within your production instance.

Development Instance

A development instance is a copy of a production instance that is used for testing or training purposes.

The development instance is a sandbox environment in which you can experiment with new features or applications without impacting your live data.

All developers have access to one free development instance; additional development instances must be purchased.

Your first organization will be named Org1 by default, but you can rename it after installation if you choose to do so.

FAQ on Salesforce Organizations

Can I Have Multiple Organizations Within My Account?

Yes, you can have multiple organizations in your customer account. However, only one organization can be a Primary org; any additional organizations within your account are known as Additional orgs.

Salesforce recommends having only one Primary org per customer account to avoid confusion, but there’s no limit on how many Additional orgs you can have.

This allows each customer to have unique access control rules, custom branding options and deployment structures based on their specific business needs.

Can I Delete Orgs?

Yes, you can delete organizations. If an organization is only used by a single user or group of users, Salesforce recommends deleting these organizations. When you delete an organization, all its related objects are also deleted.

Do I Need Multiple Orgs?

One of your first questions as you consider creating an org maybe, Do I need a new one? The answer depends on your business needs.

Multiple orgs make sense for many reasons, including different business units in a company or functional areas like sales, marketing, and finance.

If there are core functions common to all areas of your business, for example, accounts receivable you can consolidate them into a shared services org.

When Should I Use Orgs?

Orgs are groups of users within a single organization. If you’re part of an enterprise that uses many different Salesforce organizations, they’ll all live in one account but still function as individual entities.

These could be departments or branches of your business, each with its own manager who can manage its employees or members independently.

Orgs aren’t restricted to singular departments if you have ten different departments for your business, you can create ten different orgs that live under one parent company.
